In 2023, Books in Homes received a generous grant from the US Department of Education to launch a new Building a Culture of Literacy program. Through this program, BIH has partnered with 14 schools across the US to distribute self-selected books to students, contribute to classroom libraries, and provide professional learning opportunities for educators. Participating schools also receive support to host family literacy nights throughout the year.

In December 2023, Moreno Elementary School hosted its first Culture of Literacy event. The students attended  several stations during the day of the event. They cooked,  made crafts, designed their own bookmarks, participated in a reading scavenger hunt, did Karaoke,  made gingerbread houses, and went on a virtual field trip to NYC. Each activity included literacy components and the day was filled with guest readers.
